While the number of certified instructors continues to rise, certification is not consistently translating into class placements, prompting concerns that the issue can no longer be viewed solely as a matter of individual capability.
Instructor A, a certified Pilates instructor, shared that although she obtained her certification and applied to multiple studios, opportunities were limited due to her lack of teaching experience. “Even with a certification, it’s difficult to be placed directly into classes,” she explained. This inconsistency can create confusion when instructors seek overseas opportunities or attempt to translate domestic credentials into international contexts.
Experts warn that these issues may affect not only individual instructors’ career continuity but also the quality of member experience. Fitness industry expert C noted that when systems for accumulating teaching experience are unstable, the long-term consistency and safety of classes may be compromised.
As concerns continue to grow around the gap between certification and actual teaching opportunities, competition among associations, and the lack of standardized international benchmarks, attention is now turning to how the industry will establish clearer criteria and more sustainable systems going forward.
